What is Gratuity in Qatar?
Gratuity is the end-of-service benefit a Qatari employer must pay any employee who has completed at least one year of continuous service. It is governed by Article 54 of Qatar Labour Law No. 14 of 2004 and applies to private-sector employees on any contract type.
- Based on the employee's last basic salary only
- Does not include housing, transport, food, or overtime allowances
- Eligibility begins after one full year of continuous service
- Calculated at a statutory minimum of 3 weeks (21 days) per year
- Partial years prorated — there is no upper cap
Factors That Determine Gratuity
Only base wage is used. Allowances and bonuses are excluded from the calculation.
Minimum 1 year required. Each additional year — even partial — increases entitlement proportionally.
21 days/year is the minimum. Many employers offer 30 days or more — check your contract.
Resignation, end-of-contract, or termination all qualify — only dismissal for gross misconduct (Article 61) may forfeit gratuity.
How Is Qatar Gratuity Calculated?
Daily basic salary (Monthly Basic ÷ 30) multiplied by the agreed days per year, multiplied by years of service.
Minimum 1 year of continuous service required (Article 54).
21 days basic salary per year of service — partial years prorated.
If your contract specifies a higher rate (e.g. 30 days), the higher rate applies.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is gratuity calculated in Qatar?
Under Qatar Labour Law No. 14 of 2004 (Article 54), end-of-service gratuity is three weeks (21 days) of basic salary for every year of continuous service, prorated for partial years.
When is an employee in Qatar eligible for gratuity?
After completing at least one year of continuous service with the same employer. Anyone who has served less than one year is not entitled to end-of-service gratuity in Qatar.
Is gratuity in Qatar based on basic or gross salary?
On the last basic salary only. Allowances such as housing, transport, food, and overtime are excluded from the gratuity calculation.
Is there an upper cap on Qatar gratuity?
No. Unlike UAE, Qatar Labour Law does not set a maximum cap on the total end-of-service gratuity. The longer the service, the higher the payout — proportionally.
Do I get gratuity if I resign in Qatar?
Yes. Provided you have completed at least one year of continuous service, you are entitled to gratuity on resignation, subject to serving the contractual notice period.
Can the employer offer more than 3 weeks per year?
Yes. 21 days per year is the statutory minimum under Article 54. Employers can offer a higher rate in the employment contract — and many do for senior employees or after long service.
Is gratuity payable if I am dismissed for misconduct?
Under Article 61 of Qatar Labour Law, gratuity may be forfeited if the employee is dismissed for gross misconduct as defined in the law. In all other dismissal cases, gratuity is payable in full.
When must the employer pay gratuity in Qatar?
Final settlement — including gratuity — should be paid within seven days of the end-of-service date, per the Wage Protection System (WPS) rules.
